Bengaluru gets a New Face: Govt launches B-SMILE

The Karnataka government has launched Bengaluru Smart Infrastructure Limited (B-SMILE), a special-purpose vehicle (SPV) aimed at transforming the city's infrastructure.

Key Highlights of B-SMILE • Funding: Backed by an initial ₹7,000 crore investment from the state budget. • Ownership: 90% government-owned, with 10% stake held by BBMP.

• Major Projects:

40 km of tunnel roads to ease congestion. Flyovers and underpasses for smoother traffic flow. Road development along stormwater drain buffer zones. A 250-metre sky deck for pedestrian movement.

How B-SMILE Operates • Functions independently from BBMP, which is set for restructuring. • Can handle both public and private sector-funded projects.

• Governed by an 11-member board, including a full-time IAS officer as CEO. • Has full jurisdiction over Bengaluru Urban district.

Impact on Bengaluru • Expected to reduce traffic congestion and improve long-term mobility. • Will accelerate infrastructure development beyond BBMP’s routine maintenance.
