BRICS leaders adopt Kazan Declaration

The Kazan Declaration was adopted at the 16th BRICS Summit held in Kazan, Russia, from October 22-24, 2024.

The key points from the declaration:

Strengthening Multilateralism: The declaration emphasizes the importance of strengthening multilateralism for just global development and security.

Global Governance: BRICS reaffirmed its commitment to improving global governance by making international systems more flexible, effective, efficient, responsive, representative, legitimate, democratic, and accountable.

Participation of EMDCs: The declaration stresses the need for more meaningful participation of emerging markets and developing countries (EMDCs) and least developed countries, especially in Africa, Latin America, and the Caribbean, in global decision-making.

African Solutions: It highlights the relevance of the principle "African solutions to African problems" and calls for resolving conflicts in Africa based on this principle.

Terrorism: The leaders unequivocally condemned terrorism in all its forms and called for a comprehensive approach to address terrorism at global and regional levels.

Peaceful Resolution: The declaration emphasizes the need for peaceful resolution of conflicts through dialogue and diplomacy, including the situation in Ukraine and Palestine.

Financial Cooperation: BRICS leaders called for greater financial cooperation, including the use of local currencies in financial transactions and the establishment of a BRICS Grain Exchange and a BRICS Clear depositary.

Biodiversity Conservation: The declaration reaffirms the importance of biodiversity conservation and the implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.

The Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) is a plan to reverse biodiversity loss and restore nature by 2050. It was adopted in December 2022 at the 15th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP 15).

Humanitarian Crisis: The leaders expressed concern over the humanitarian crisis in Sudan and called for urgent measures to ensure the protection of lives. Regional Security: The declaration advocates for an urgent peaceful settlement in Afghanistan to strengthen regional security and stability.
