The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the development of the National Maritime Heritage Complex (NMHC) at Lothal, Gujarat.
It is an ambitious project aimed at showcasing India's rich maritime heritage, which spans over 4,500 years.
Project Phases: The project will be completed in two phases. Phase 1A is already under implementation with more than 60% progress and is expected to be completed by 2025.
Phase 1B and 2: In-principle approval has been given for Phase 1B and Phase 2, with plans to raise funds through voluntary contributions.
Light House Museum: The construction of the Light House Museum under Phase 1B will be funded by the Directorate General of Lighthouses and Lightships (DGLL).
About the Lothal, Gujarat Lothal is an ancient city of the Indus Valley Civilization, located in the Bhal region of the modern state of Gujarat, India.
Historical Significance: Lothal is one of the most prominent cities of the ancient Indus Valley Civilization, dating back to around 3700 BCE.
Archaeological Discoveries: Excavations at Lothal, conducted by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) from 1955 to 1960, revealed the world's earliest known dock.
This dock connected the city to an ancient course of the Sabarmati River, facilitating trade with regions as far as West Asia and Africa.
Trade Center: Lothal was a vital trade center, known for its bead-making industry, gemstones, and ornaments.
The city's trade network extended to Mesopotamia, Egypt, and Persia. Archaeological
Features: The site includes the acropolis, lower town, bead factory, warehouses, and a sophisticated drainage system.
UNESCO Nomination: Lothal has been nominated to be enlisted as a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its historical and archaeological significance.
