Chief Justice formally nominates Justice Sanjiv Khanna as his successor

Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud has formally nominated Justice Sanjiv Khanna as his successor.

Nomination Date: The nomination was made on October 17, 2024.

Successor: Justice Sanjiv Khanna, currently the second-most senior judge of the Supreme Court, has been recommended for the position.

Retirement: Chief Justice DY Chandrachud is set to retire on November 11, 2024.

Approval Process: The recommendation is pending approval from the Union government. 

Tenure: If approved, Justice Khanna will become the 51st Chief Justice of India and will serve until his retirement on May 13, 2025.

About the Chief Justice of India The Chief Justice of India (CJI) is the head of the Supreme Court of India and the highest-ranking officer of the Indian judiciary. 

Role: The CJI is responsible for the allocation of cases to other judges and the appointment of constitutional benches that deal with important legal matters.

Appointment: The CJI is appointed by the President of India based on the recommendation of the outgoing CJI, in consultation with other senior judges.
