The World Health Organization (WHO) has recognized India for eliminating trachoma as a public health problem.
This significant achievement was announced on October 8, 2024.
Recognition: India is the third country in the WHO South-East Asia Region to achieve this milestone, following Nepal and Myanmar.
Efforts: India's success is attributed to strong government leadership, the commitment of ophthalmologists, and effective collaboration with partners.
About Trachoma Trachoma is a bacterial infection of the eye caused by Chlamydia trachomatis.
Symptoms: Early symptoms include itching and irritation of the eyes, while advanced stages can lead to swollen eyelids, pus discharge, sensitivity to light, eye pain, and vision problems.
Causes: It spreads through contact with the eyes, eyelids, nose, and throat secretions of infected individuals, as well as through handling infected objects and flies.
Risk Factors: It is more common in children aged 4 to 6, in crowded places, and in areas with poor sanitation.
Treatment: Treatment involves antibiotics and, in severe cases, surgery to correct eyelid deformities.
