India ranks 79th in global Rule of Law Index Legal Affairs

India ranked 79th out of 142 countries in the 2024 Rule of Law Index released by the World Justice Project (WJP) on October 23, 2024.

The index evaluates countries based on eight indicators:

1.Constraints On Government Powers,
2.Absence Of Corruption,
3.Open Government,
4.Fundamental Rights,
5.Order And Security,
6.Regulatory Enforcement,
7.Civil Justice,
8.Criminal Justice.

Key Points: 

Governance Indicators: India performed relatively well in constraints on government powers (60/142) and open government (44/142). 

Fundamental Rights: India ranked lower in the protection of fundamental rights (102/142).

Order and Security: The country also scored poorly in order and security (98/142). 

Criminal Justice: India's efficiency in criminal justice was ranked 82/142.

Business Climate: The rankings reflected challenges in creating a good business climate, with India scoring 97/142 in the absence of corruption, 78/142 in regulatory enforcement, and 107/142 in civil justice delivery.

Regional Comparison: 

South Asia: India ranked third in South Asia, after Nepal (69) and Sri Lanka (75).

Global Rankings: 

Top Countries: Denmark, Norway, Finland, Sweden, and Germany were the top five countries in the index.
