The Centre has issued a draft notification to identify the eco-sensitive zone (ESZ) around Kappatagudda Wildlife Sanctuary.
Area: The proposed ESZ covers an area of 322.695 square kilometers, of which 23.804 square kilometers is forest area and the remaining 298.890 square kilometers is non-forest area.
Approval: The proposal has received in-principle approval from a Cabinet sub-committee chaired by Environment Minister Eshwar Khandre.
Other Areas: In addition to Kappatagudda, the draft notification also includes Bukkapatna, Kammasandra, Nagarahole, Cauvery Wildlife Sanctuary, and Dandeli Wildlife Sanctuary as potential ESZs.
Purpose: The ESZ designation aims to protect the ecological balance and biodiversity of these areas by regulating activities that may cause harm to the environment. Public Consultation: The draft notification is open for public comments and suggestions before it is finalized.
Restricted to any in ESZ
Location: It is spread across the three taluks of Mundargi, Gadak, and Shirahatti in Gadag district. Biodiversity: The sanctuary is known for its rich biodiversity, including a variety of flora and fauna.
It encompasses riverine areas, dry deciduous forests, scrublands, and grasslands.
Flora and Fauna: The sanctuary is home to several endangered species and medicinal plants.
Conservation Efforts: The sanctuary was officially notified as a wildlife sanctuary under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, in 2019.
