Karnataka govt gives nod to give internal reservation among Scheduled Castes

Karnataka government has approved internal reservation among Scheduled Castes (SCs).

This decision was made during a cabinet meeting on October 28, 2024, following a recent Supreme Court verdict that allows states to create sub-classifications within Scheduled Castes for reservation purposes.

Key Points:

Cabinet Decision: The Karnataka cabinet approved internal reservation and decided to form a commission headed by a retired High Court judge to collect empirical data.

Recruitment Postponement: All upcoming recruitments will be postponed until the commission submits its report.

This move aims to ensure a more equitable distribution of reservation benefits among SC communities in Karnataka.

Supreme Court Verdict: The Supreme Court ruled on August 1, 2024, that states are constitutionally empowered to make sub-classifications within SCs to uplift socially and educationally backward castes.

A seven-judge constitution bench headed by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud, by a majority of 6:1, set aside the apex court's five-judge bench verdict of 2004 in the EV Chinnaiah vs State of Andhra Pradesh case which had held that no sub-classification of Scheduled Castes (SCs) can be allowed.
