Kavery Kutumba meet of riparian states to be held

The Kavery Kutumba meet of riparian states is scheduled to be held on October 22, 2024, at the North Gate of Mysuru Palace from 11 AM.

This meeting will bring together farmers' representatives from the four states of the Cauvery River basin: Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Puducherry.

Key Issues to be Discussed:

Proposal for a Balancing Dam: Discussions on the proposal for a balancing dam at Mekedatu in Karnataka or at Rasimanal in Tamil Nadu.

River Water Pollution: Steps to check pollution of the river water.

Promotion of Goodwill and Harmony: Efforts to promote goodwill and harmony among the farmers of the riparian states.

About the Mekedatu and Rasimanal project 

The Mekedatu project and the Rasimanal project are both proposals to build balancing reservoirs across the Cauvery River, but they have sparked significant debate and tension between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

Mekedatu Project Location: Near Kanakapura in Ramanagara district, Karnataka. Purpose: The project aims to provide drinking water to Bengaluru and Ramanagara district, as well as generate hydro-electricity.

Rasimanal Project Location: In Tamil Nadu. Purpose: Proposed by Tamil Nadu farmers to counter the Mekedatu project and ensure their water needs are met.
