Marburg Outbreak in Rwanda

The Marburg virus outbreak in Rwanda was declared on September 27, 2024.

First Outbreak: This is the first time Marburg virus disease (MVD) has been reported in Rwanda.

Confirmed Cases: As of October 8, 2024, there have been 58 confirmed cases and 13 deaths.

About the Marburg virus 

The Marburg virus is a highly infectious pathogen that causes Marburg virus disease (MVD), a severe and often fatal hemorrhagic fever. 

Family: It belongs to the Filoviridae family, which also includes the Ebola virus.

Symptoms: Symptoms typically begin suddenly with high fever, chills, headache, and muscle aches, progressing to severe abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, rash, and bleeding from multiple sites (e.g., gums, eyes, and gastrointestinal tract).

Transmission: The virus is transmitted through direct contact with the bodily fluids of infected individuals, contaminated surfaces, or handling of infected animals, such as bats or nonhuman primates. 

Incubation Period: Symptoms usually appear 2 to 21 days after exposure.

Treatment: There is no specific antiviral treatment; management focuses on supportive care, including rehydration and symptom management.
