New Peacock Sanctuaries in Karnataka and Kerala

Union Minister for Environment, Forest, and Climate Change announced the creation of two new Peacock Sanctuaries in India.

The sanctuaries are located in Adichunchanagiri, Karnataka, and Choolannuar, Kerala.

Key Highlights:

Purpose: These sanctuaries aim to protect the national bird, the peacock, and their habitats.

Conservation Efforts: The sanctuaries provide a safe space for peafowls to live and thrive without human disturbance.

The Indian Peafowl (Pavo cristatus), commonly known as the peacock, is listed as "Least Concern" on the IUCN Red List. 

Biodiversity: Peafowls play key roles in ecosystems, such as spreading seeds, and their conservation helps maintain ecological balance.
