NMCG Approves Action Plan 2025 under River Cities Alliance

The National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) has approved the Action Plan 2025 to enhance urban river rejuvenation under the River Cities Alliance (RCA).

This initiative aims to integrate river-sensitive urban planning across India's growing cities.

Key Highlights of Action Plan 2025 • Urban River Management Plans (URMPs): The plan focuses on expanding URMPs, which help cities manage rivers sustainably. • Capacity Building: Training programs for urban planners and administrators will be launched, starting with Tamil Nadu.

About the National Mission for Clean Ganga The National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) is an initiative under the Ministry of Jal Shakti, aimed at rejuvenating and protecting the Ganga River.

It was established in 2011 and serves as the implementation arm of the National Ganga Council.

Key Objectives of NMCG • Pollution Control: Reducing industrial and sewage waste in the Ganga. • River Rejuvenation: Restoring the ecological health of the river.

• Biodiversity Conservation: Protecting aquatic species like the Ganges River Dolphin. • Public Awareness: Engaging communities through programs like Ganga Praharis.

• Infrastructure Development: 

Constructing sewage treatment plants (STPs) and improving riverfronts.

Major Initiatives • Namami Gange Programme: Launched in 2014, this flagship program focuses on cleaning and conserving the Ganga. • River Cities Alliance (RCA): Strengthens urban river management across 145 cities.

• Ganga Aqualife Conservation Monitoring Centre: 

A digital platform for tracking river health. • Project Dolphin: Dedicated to conserving river dolphins and their habitat.

About the River Cities Alliance The River Cities Alliance (RCA) is a pioneering initiative launched in 2021 by the Ministry of Jal Shakti and the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs to promote sustainable urban river management in India.

• Global Expansion:

 RCA has evolved into the Global River Cities Alliance (GRCA), launched at COP28, with participation from 11 countries.
