The 153-acre Saalumarada Thimmakka Botanical Garden is set to come up in North Bengaluru, near Yelahanka.
Location: The botanical garden will be located on 153 acres of forest land at Madappanahalli.
Model: It will be modelled after Cubbon Park.
Purpose: The garden aims to address the shortage of lung space in North Bengaluru and provide health benefits to the residents.
Funding: The project will be developed with the help of CSR funds and the social responsibility department
About Saalumarada Thimmakka Saalumarada Thimmakka is a renowned environmentalist from Karnataka, India, celebrated for her extraordinary contribution to tree planting and conservation.
Early Life: Born on June 30, 1911, in Gubbi Taluk, Tumkur district, Karnataka. She had to drop out of school to help her family with farming.
Tree Planting: Unable to have children, Thimmakka and her husband Chikkaiah decided to plant trees as their legacy.
They planted 385 banyan trees along a 45-kilometer stretch of highway between Hulikal and Kudur.
Legacy: Over her lifetime, Thimmakka has planted nearly 8,000 trees.
Her dedication to the environment has earned her the nickname "Saalumarada" (meaning "row of trees").
Recognition: She has received several awards, including the Padma Shri in 2019.
She was also appointed as Karnataka's environment ambassador and given a cabinet rank by the state government.
