Similipal becomes India's 107th national park, largest in Odisha

Similipal has officially been declared India’s 107th national park and the largest in Odisha, covering 845.70 sq km. This long-awaited recognition strengthens conservation efforts and highlights Similipal’s rich biodiversity and tribal heritage.

National parks can be declared both by the Central Government and State governments. No alteration of the boundaries of a national park shall be made except on a resolution passed by the State Legislature.

Key Highlights of Similipal National Park 

 • Location: Situated in Mayurbhanj district, Odisha, it is part of the Similipal Tiger Reserve (STR). • Biodiversity: Home to 55 species of mammals, 361 species of birds, 62 species of reptiles, and 21 species of amphibians.

Tiger Reserve: It shelters 40 wild tigers, including the world’s only wild melanistic tigers. • Historical Significance: First proposed as a national park in 1980, but the official declaration came in 2025.

•Tribal Communities:

 Indigenous groups like the Birhor, Hill Khadia, Ho, Santhal, and Mankidia reside in the region.
