UNESCO: World Book Capital for 2026

Rabat, Morocco has been named the UNESCO World Book Capital for 2026.

Announcement Date: October 8, 2024.

UNESCO Director-General: Audrey Azoulay announced the designation.

Reason: Rabat was chosen for its vibrant local book industry, which includes 54 publishing houses and hosts the third-largest international book and publishing fair in Africa.

Theme: The city's book industry plays a crucial role in advancing education and democratizing knowledge.

Previous Capitals: Rio de Janeiro will hold the title in 2025, and Strasbourg was the World Book Capital for 2024.

About the UNESCO World Book Capital 

The UNESCO World Book Capital is a prestigious title awarded annually to a city that demonstrates a strong commitment to books and reading.

Purpose: To promote books and reading for all ages and demographics, both domestically and internationally.

Activities: The designated city organizes various activities throughout the year to celebrate books and literacy. 

Selection Criteria: Cities are selected based on their efforts to promote books and reading, their vibrant literary scene, and their commitment to literacy and education.

Celebration Date: The celebration typically begins on April 23, coinciding with World Book and Copyright Day.
