Devanur Mahadeva, a renowned Kannada writer and social activist, has been honored with the 2024 Vaikom Award for Social Justice. The award was presented by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin during the inauguration of the Vaikom Periyar Memorial Building in Kerala on December 12, 2024.
About Devanur Mahadeva and the Vaikom Award:
Devanur Mahadeva: Born in 1948 in Devanuru village, Karnataka. Known for his literary works that delve into the complexities of Dalit life.
Notable works include "Odalaala" (1978) and "Kusumabale" (1988). Recipient of the Sahitya Akademi Award and the Padma Shri, which he returned in 2015 in protest against rising intolerance
Vaikom Award:
Instituted in 2023 by the Tamil Nadu government to honor individuals or organizations embodying the values of equality and justice.
Named after the historic Vaikom Satyagraha (1924-1925), which challenged caste-based restrictions on access to the Vaikom Temple in Kerala. Includes a cash prize of Rs 5 lakh, a medal, and a certificate of appreciation.
